In Every Generation
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley
During the Jewish, Passover Seder, there is a section recounting all the blessings and miracles the Israelites have received; and after each is recited, those gathered around the festival table say, “Dayenu,” “It would have been enough.” In Ali Viterbi’s 2022-premiering play In Every Generationtime travels through a series of one family’s Seder celebrations that stretch from the original exodus from Egypt all the way to a future imaging of what the dinner of traditional dishes and age-old prayers might be in 2050. Now in its West Coast premiere at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, In Every Generation could have merited from the playwright’s having said a few more ‘dayenu’s’ while deciding which issues, themes, and references to include in the two-hour, fifteen-minute staging.
