Come from Away
Irene Sankoff & David Hein (Book, Music & Lyrics)
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley

Whenever TheatreWorks Silicon Valley combines the masterful artistry, deep-felt values, and insightful creativity of long-time collaborators Robert Kelley as Stage Director and William Liberatore as Music Director, the heart is bound to reign forth in a magical, moving production not to be missed. Such is once again the case as the company becomes one of the first regional theatres to open the Broadway and London sensation, Come from Away, by the wife and husband team, Irene Sankoff and David Hein. With a rousing, contagious score that continually emphasizes a steady beat much like that of a heart, Come from Away is an emotional testament and tribute to the citizens of a tiny, remote town who welcomed strangers to their midst at a time the entire world was at a standstill in shock and sorrow.
Surely like everyone in the TheatreWorks audience of Mountain View’s Performing Arts Center the night I attended on April 21, citizens of Gander, Newfoundland remember where they were at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001: “I’m sitting in the car” … “I’m in the library” … “I’m in the staff room.” But unlike the rest of us, the 9000 inhabitants of this remote island province of Canada also remember seeing thirty-eight planes land at their airport, eventually to unload into their tiny community 7000 dazed, scared, sleepy, hungry passengers and crew – all desperately in need of a hot shower and clean clothes … and news of what really happened.
Please continue to Talkin’Broadway for the rest of my review.
